Club Night Film Show 21st February 2018

by Mike Brett

I showed a selection from video recordings with an agricultural history theme made for the archives of the Sandford Heritage Group. Most were modern recordings of restored machinery still being used today, either for real work or when holding displays for visitors. These ranged from horse and steam ploughing through to cutting and combing thatching reeds (courtesy members Ian and Keith White).

But the video that caused the most discussion was ‘home movie’ material shot on a farm in the Tavistock area in the 1930-40s which gave a real sense of the mixed farming which went on in those days. It featured a long section showing the gathering up and building of a hay rick using man-power, horse-power, car-power and a haypole!
